Creating typefaces: 1–3 September

The students will develop a coherent stencil set of letters step by step. This set will be as extended as possible, and big enough so as to work with sentences and words to create a set of graphic pieces.

Exhibition and presentation: 5 September

The students will exhibit the sketches, the parts, the ‘typefaces’ and present the applications.

Methodology

You can start working in two different ways:

  • From a calligraphic sketch. Students will work with double pencil on the basis of Carolingian calligraphy. Previous knowledge is not necessary but will be advantageous.
  • From existing vernacular sources. Students can carry out preliminary research into the vernacular letters that are present in their city and bring good frontal photos.
    Workflow

Students will be encouraged to work in groups of 2–3 people. Letters can be created just by hand, or by hand and a computer – if the latter, the attendees need to be skilled in vector drawing, ideally in a font editor.

Type walk: types and faces of Ljubljana

A type walk leads us through the material, historical, cultural and linguistic diversity of letterforms in the center of Ljubljana. While searching for their common design features, we will pay attention to vivid compositions of inscriptions, unusual ligatures and thoughtful diacritical marks. The concept of a walk adresses a very important skill decisive for the typographic education. How to observe the type? How to understand what you are looking at?
